Addressing the event, MARD Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep said that the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13 aims to call for the attention of nations to promote awareness of risks and disaster mitigation.
The theme for International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2019 is “Reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services” and is suitable to the current situation of Vietnam, Hiep noted.
It is hopeful that with the support of international organisations and efforts of the Vietnamese Government and people, the disaster prevention infrastructure system of Vietnam will promote its efficiency, contributing to increasing Vietnam’s resilience to climate change and reducing the damage caused by natural disasters, Hiep said.
At the meeting, a National Press Award for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control in 2019 was launched.
Country Director of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in VietnamCaitlin Wiesen said that the press award, the first of its kind, is a promising initiative on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2019.
She noted that UNDP wishes to coordinate with the MARD, the Ministry of Information and Communication and press agencies in this press award and other activities of disaster risk management to contribute to building a greener Vietnam with better resilience and prosperity so that no one will be left behind.
