Politburo member Phong and the survey team toured the strawberry cultivation model at the Chimifarm joint stock company and the pine forest tourism site in Ang village, Dong Sang commune.
Meeting with the Moc Chau district leaders, Phong recognised and applauded the locality for having followed the right path set by the UN in its sustainable hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
Not just Moc Chau but other districts of the province have also effectively implemented afforestation associated with the farming of fruit trees in service of economic development, she said, asking Moc Chau to utilise its favourable natural conditions in order to develop tourism attached to the people’s livelihoods in a sustainable fashion.
The district was told to ensure a clean and healthy environment to attract investment in tourism, pay attention to healthcare for locals in remote, isolated and border areas, and prioritise the development of organic fruit and vegetables and high-quality fruit trees to improve the people’s income, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.
Permanent NA Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong speaks at the working session with Son La provincial leaders.
Later the same day, NA Vice Chairwoman Phong and the survey team had a working session with the Son La provincial leaders, during which she was reported on some basic features in the local hunger elimination, poverty reduction and sustainable development situation. Accordingly, the poverty rate in Son La decreased from 31.91% (87,000 households) in 2016 to 25.42% (71,800 households) last year, representing an average annual decline of 3.2%.
Phong emphasised that the examination of poverty reduction and sustainable development in Son La is a step to implement the message and resolution adopted at the conference “Parliaments and sustainable development goals”, jointly held by the Vietnamese NA and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the central coastal city of Da Nang in 2018. She hailed this step as being of great significance towards the implementation in other provinces.
The NA official said Son La will be selected as a place for the exemplary implementation of the building of a provincial-level locality assessment toolkit.
