NYPD use fake package to catch serial parcel thief
Police arrested a serial parcel snatcher who was preying on one Upper West Side apartment building — by using a package stuffed with law enforcement magazines as bait.
Carlos Maisonet, 52, ripped off multiple packages from an apartment building on W. 85th Street four times since Jan. 30, police said.
Each time, he allegedly forced the lock and broke into the building’s mail room, the 20th Precinct wrote on Facebook.
In total, Maisonet stole $1,775 worth of items, including a laptop, police said
To catch the suspect, NYPD Lt. Tony Lavino and Officer Nicholas Ramsammy decided to set a trap last Sunday morning.
They left the bait — a box filled with copies of The Blue Magazine featuring Police Benevolent Association president Patrick Lynch on the cover — and waited.
At around noon, Maisonet went in the mailroom and grabbed the box, cops said.
“As you can imagine, our perpetrator was not thrilled when he learned that the package he got caught committing a burglary to steal contained only policing periodicals,” commanding officer Deputy Inspector Timothy Malin said in the Facebook post.
Maisonet was charged with burglary and possession of stolen property, and is being held on $30,000 bail.
“We doubt the publishers of The Blue Magazine had this in mind when they sent these magazines to our precinct,” Malin said. “But Lt. Lavino, Officer Ramsammy, and the rest of us would like to thank them for the assist in taking this criminal off the street!
Maisonet has 30 prior arrests, police said, as well as an active parole warrant.
