Hanoi filled with scent of grapefruit flowers

The season when grapefruits blossom comes between mid-February and early March annually. Grapefruit flowers are in full bloom for only a short time, usually for between two to three weeks, after that the flowers usually fade and start to produce fruits. Cold weather is usually considered the optimum weather condition for grapefruit to blossom. This year however, the warm weather has made flowers come into bloom earlier than usual. Hoa Buoi (grapefruit flowers) are being sold by street vendors and can easily be found on Xa Dan, Pham Ngoc Thach, Giang Vo, and Ton That Tung Streets. After the buds start to bloom, the flowers are cut and then divided into smaller bunches. Grapefruit flowers are one of the most popular items of the spring season. The prices of grapefruit flowers range between VND200,000 to 250,000 per kilogram. The flower buds themselves are priced between VND150,000 to 200,000 per kilogram. A street vendor waters the flowers to maintain their freshness throughout the day. The scent of grapefruit flowers is a typical feature of Hanoi’s streets every spring.
